Zultanite vs Diaspore — Same Stone, Different Names

Zultanite and diaspore are not two different stones. Diaspore is the mineral species; Zultanite is one registered trade name for its rare, colour-changing gem grade from Türkiye. Csarite, Ottomanite and Turkizite are further trade names for the very same material.

Species vs trade name

A mineral species is defined by chemistry and crystal structure. Diaspore’s is fixed: aluminium oxide hydroxide, α-AlO(OH), orthorhombic. A trade name is a commercial label a seller applies to a marketable grade of a material. “Zultanite” is such a label — introduced, per gemological references, by the mining-rights holder Murat Akgün for gem-quality Türkiye diaspore. It tells you about branding and provenance, not about a different mineral.

The four trade names

• Zultanite® — a registered trademark; the name most associated with the gem, evoking the Ottoman sultans.
• Csarite® — a second registered trade name for the same material, created after a dispute over the “Zultanite” name.
• Ottomanite — a further trade name in circulation.
• Turkizite — another trade name for the same Türkiye-sourced diaspore.

On a laboratory report, all four are identified simply as diaspore, with the colour-change behaviour noted. The trade name is applied downstream at retail.

Why it matters to a buyer

Because the underlying stone is identical, you should not pay a premium for a word alone. Compare stones on the things that actually differ between individual gems — strength of colour change, clarity, cut and size — rather than on which trade name a seller has chosen. The rule of thumb is worth repeating: all Zultanite is diaspore, but not all diaspore is Zultanite.
